Moving Tips
Before leaving your present address, consider:
- Call for reading of gas and electric meters (PG&E 800-743-5002) and water meter (EBMUD 510-287-1380). Don’t have them turned off. Your purchaser will be informed to change the account.
- Stop garbage pick-up (Waste Management 510-430-8509)
- Cancel telephone, newspaper deliveries, diaper service, gardener and existing insurance at close of escrow.
- Establish new service with the utility companies in the city to which you are moving.
- Arrange for new internet and cable services at your new home. If possible, test phones and computer equipment prior to your formal move-in to ensure that you don’t loose days of connectivity.
- Send your forwarding address to your local post office and send change of address cards to magazines, insurance companies, credit companies, banks, investment companies, friends, stores, etc.
- Transfer your fire insurance on household goods or other insurance on personal property so that they will be covered at your new home and en route. This is a good time to re-bid existing insurance coverages.
- Notify your children’s schools about your intended move. Get a letter or transcript of your children’s status in school.
- Obtain birth records, baptism records, medical records and eyeglass/medical prescriptions prior to departure.
- Transfer bank accounts.
- If automobile or other possessions are not fully paid for, get permission to move them and notify automobile insurance agent.
- Have your present bank arrange credit references for establishing new accounts in the city to which you are moving.
- Leave keys for your present property with your Realtor or neighbor.
- Do a walk through with the buyers of your home.
- Clean your home after you have removed all of your belongings. Leave the property in clean condition.
