Exploring Piedmont Homes for Sale

Living In Piedmont

Piedmont is a small, affluent residential community that is notable for its charming homes and estates, tree-lined streets and top-ranked public schools. Although primarily a residential community, it enjoys the abundance of cultural and recreational activities of its larger neighbors, Oakland and Berkeley.

Piedmont is a “city within a city”, as it is completely surrounded by Oakland, yet retains a small town life enhanced by first rate city services, including its own fire, police, public works and school system. Located just minutes from San Francisco, Emeryville, and the Oakland financial district, Piedmont remains one of the top choices for executives and professionals who want to enjoy community life while remaining close to large centers of commerce.

Piedmont has approximately 11,000 residents, 3,800 households and covers 1.7 square miles.  In the 1920’s, it was known as the “City of Millionaires” because there were more millionaires per square mile than any other city in the United States.  Due to the superb public services, including a top-ranked school system, bucolic setting and active community, Piedmont homes tend to be more expensive than similar residences in the nearby cities of Oakland and Berkeley.

Although Piedmont is primarily a residential community, you will find a small downtown complete with Mulberry’s Market (the only shopping in town), three banks, a gas station and several professional offices.  At the center of town is Piedmont Park, often a central meeting area for children and adults, where they can enjoy picnics, off-leash walks with a dog, numerous concerts and festivals and a play area for children.

Piedmont has three excellent elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.  Over 98% of the Piedmont High graduates matriculate to college.  Support for the school system is broad and community based, with voters regularly approving bond measures to help maintain the high level of academic excellence.  There is also a high level of parental activism in school activities and fundraising efforts.

And no small town experience would be complete without the outdoor Movies in the Park, the 4th of July Parade, Harvest Festival or Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot (a three mile run through town).

Piedmont homes for sale in this community are often quite limited, creating competitive challenges for buyers and strategic opportunities for sellers.
